DR.HEIDEGGER`S EXPERIMENT

Dr. HEIDEGGER`S EXPERIMENT

BY NATHANIEL HAWTHORNE

AUTOR

Nathaniel Hawthorne (born Nathaniel Hathorne; July 4, 1804 – May 19, 1864) was an American novelist and short story writer.
Nathaniel Hathorne was born in 1804 in the city of
Salem, Massachusetts to Nathaniel Hathorne and Elizabeth Clarke Manning Hathorne. He later changed his name to "Hawthorne", adding a "w" to dissociate from relatives including John Hathorne, a judge during the Salem Witch Trials. Hawthorne attended Bowdoin College
Hawthorne's works belong to romanticism or, more specifically, dark romanticism, cautionary tales that suggest that guilt, sin, and evil are the most inherent natural qualities of humanity. Many of his works are inspired by Puritan New England,

combining historical romance loaded with symbolism and deep psychological themes, bordering on surrealism. His depictions of the past are a version of historical fiction used only as a vehicle to express common themes of ancestral sin, guilt and retribution. His later writings also reflect his negative view of the Transcendentalism movement.
Hawthorne was predominantly a
short story writer in his early career.

SUMMARY

The story is about a scientist named Dr. Heidegger. He invited some friends to make an experiment. All his friends are very old people, and all of them made a lot of mistakes when they were young. So, Dr. Heidegger asked them to help in the experiment, and he showed them a withered rose. Then he put the rose some kind of liquid that looked as water and the rose bloom up again. Professedly that water came from the fountain of youth. The old people drank the water and all of them rejuvenated, but at the time they felt very well and strong they began to behave at the same way than before with the same bad things that made their lives miserable. They began to fight and threw down the table where the rose and the water were. The four friends saw how the rose shrivels up again, and they looked at each other feeling the same way as an old person, and then they asked for more water, but Dr. Heidegger did not have more. So, they started to make plans to go and find the fountain of youth in Florida without conscience of their actions.
